Mortician

A mortician is a person who is responsible for performing the funeral tasks like embalming and burial of the dead, planning of the arrangements for the actual funeral ceremony. They are also called Funeral Directors or Undertakers. Sometimes they might also have to dress the body and place the body into the casket.

This job requires great sensitivity in dealing with both physical and emotional aspects of death. If you want to go into this field, start educating and preparing yourself at an early stage, to be sure you want to choose this field as a career option.

Following steps guide you on how to become a mortician:

•Start by educating yourself, through actual funeral ceremonies. Assist the mortician in the various tasks that are required to be done by a mortician.

•The most important step in becoming a mortician is obtaining a license in the same. Each state has different requirements for obtaining this license. You must be above twenty-one years old to apply. You should have completed at least two years of college in a science background to opt for this field. It is important to serve as an apprentice for almost one year to apply for this exam.

•You should work alongside a licensed mortician before applying for this exam. This apprenticeship could last from one year to even three years. You should be able to involve in the community for which you will be serving. Helping the relatives and friends of the deceased in their mourning period is a quality you should possess for this field.

•Finding a job as a mortician is not very difficult after you have passed your state certifications, as there is not much competition in the field. This is due to the daily dealings with death and grief, which not everybody is fit to handle.


You should have great patience and ability to listen, suggest and make helpful decisions for the relatives of the dead. To get the mortician’s job, you should be able to deal with the business of death while maintaining a sense of support and care for those who are suffering.
