how to write calligraphy

The art of writing- Calligraphy

Calligraphy comes from the Greek word kallosgraphe, wherein kallos means beauty and graphe means writing. It is often also known as the art of fancy lettering. This art form is dated back to 200 BC and it is practiced in various parts of the world. There are many styles to calligraphy; depending on the part of the world, it is being practiced. Calligraphy is seen in Arabic, Chinese, as well Greek writings.

The most basic tools required to start writing in calligraphy are:
• Chisel-pointed pen
• Calligraphy ink
• Appropriate paper
• Flat brush

Before you start writing with these calligraphy tools, make sure of the following:
• The paper should be fine; it should not have any slits or threads coming out, as they will interfere with your calligraphy strokes.
• Use a fine nib pen to make sure your strokes are clean.
• Stop for a second before lifting your pen from the paper so that the extra ink gets saturated in the paper and thus looks clean and crisp.
• Do not use a fountain pen unless you are entirely sure about its quality. There are chances that it might leak.
• Make sure that you are not applying too much pressure on the pen.
• The calligraphy ink should be water based.
• Make sure your paper is properly fixed to the board you are writing on so that it does not move in the middle of writing.

Initially you do not need to buy the expensive equipments of calligraphy, as they are very expensive. You will not start writing calligraphy letters until you are comfortable with the strokes involved. Read on if you want to know how to write calligraphy:

• Your chisel point pen could be a duck feather, with its end chamfered into a slant. The basic strokes include a broad stroke with the pen held in the flat direction and a thin stroke with the pen rotated the other way.
• Mostly the calligraphic pens are held at a 30-degree angle, though the angle of the pen varies according to the type of calligraphy you are writing.
• Dip the brush in the ink and then smear this ink on the pen. You can directly dip the pen in ink but that creates blotches of ink on the paper while writing.
